My visit to California

Hi first graders,

California was a lot of fun! We went to Los Angeles, which is where the TV shows and movies are made in Hollywood. I hoped that I would see someone famous, and I did. Who is this man that I saw on the first day?

If you said Superman, you are right! We were on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Superman was posing for pictures with his fans.

The stars in the sidewalk have names of TV and movie stars and other famous people on them.
This was Mrs. North's favorite one, so we took a picture of it.
Do you know who these 3 men are?

They are the 3 astronauts who were the first people to go to the moon. Apollo was the name of their spaceship. Can you read the date that it happened?

Another place that we went was to the LaBrea Tar Pits. It is a place where tar bubbles up out of the ground like water does. Tar is the gooey, sticky (and stinky) black stuff that is used for making roads. A long time ago, many animals walked into the tar and got stuck. Scientists are digging their bones out to learn all about these extinct animals. These statues show how it happened.

These were called mastodons. Can you guess what animals alive today are in the same family?

Here is a shopping street. The bush in the middle looked like a different kind of extinct animal.
Do you know what kind? The gardeners cut it into a very fancy shape!

Los Angeles is a big city full of skyscrapers. It is the 2nd largest city in the USA. Do you remember what the biggest city is? When we were downtown, look who we saw flying past! Well, not really...it is just a decoration, but it made me excited for Christmas!

Los Angeles is close to the Pacific Ocean, so we went to the beach one afternoon. The tide was out, and the birds were running in the wet sand to eat little shellfish called coquinas. There were hundreds and hundreds of coquina shells, so I brought one back for each of you.

I am back at home now for the rest of the year. I hope that I will see many more places in our big, wonderful world during 2017. When I do, I'll show them all to you.

See you next year!
Your friend,
Flat Stanley
