Puerto Rico

Hi Kids!!!

Welcome to the first grade!

My name is Flat Stanley.  Did your teacher read the book about me?  I am flat so people can send me in envelopes and suitcases all over the world.  I love to travel and I want to tell you all about the new places I go and the people that I meet this year!

This summer I went to Puerto Rico with Dr. Kristie. It was lots of fun. I traveled in a suitcase with her clothes and shoess. It was very dark in there, but I was cozy and comfortable. I stayed in the hotel while she went to work, but on the weekends she took me out, and I had some adventures.
Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean Sea.  Here is how it looks on a map.  It is hot here all the time, even in winter. Because it is so hot, some different plants can grow here.
The fruit that I am holding is one that grows in Puerto Rico and other hot places. It has 2 names. It is called Spanish lime, or limoncillo.
You can't eat the skin. When you take it off, it looks like this.  The fruit inside is shiny and yellow. It is soft like jello. It tastes sweet and sour at the same time. Like all fruits and vegetables, it is very good for you. I like to try new foods. Do you?

This is another special fruit that I tried in Puerto Rico. In one hand I am holding two bananas. I know that you eat them all the time. In my other hand, I am holding a plantain. You might never have tried one of these.  It looks a lot like a banana, but is longer, and it has to be cooked. In the second picture, I have a plate of cooked plantain. It is mashed up and fried in butter. Yum!
Do you like fried fish? Most people do! When you eat it, it may not look like this.
In Puerto Rico, they cook the fish with the head still on! This one is covered in fruit sauce, and was very good.

All of the foods here are not different. A lot of foods are just like what you eat. Do you recognize the sign behind me? The people here like hamburgers and fries just like we have in Rock Hill
Do you see something pretty unusual parked in the parking lot?

Because it is surrounded by water Puerto Rico has lots of beaches! Do you like to go to the beach? I sure do!

The sign at this beach is printed in both English and Spanish. It is warning people not to swim. Can you tell from the sign why people have to stay out of the water?
We walked in the sand, but didn't get wet.

Puerto Rico is an interesting place. it is part of our country, but it is not a state. It is part of our country, but people speak Spanish, not English.

That's all for today. I will show you some more next time.
Your friend,
Flat Stanley
