More from Puerto Rico

Hi again,

Do you want to see some more about Puerto Rico? The biggest city is San Juan. That's where our hotel was. Most of the island is not a city, though. It is pretty and green and hilly. One of Dr. Kristie's favorite things to do when she's not working is to hike, and sometimes she took me along. One of our hikes in the woods took us to this waterfall.

It was loud! You could hear it before you could see it. The water lands in a big pool. Lots of people were swimming and climbing on the rocks. The water was icy cold.

After a swim, we hiked back to the car, and then drove along the shore. Roads go all along the edge of the island. There are sandy beaches in some places. In other places, the waves crash right on rocks and cliffs.

I liked this rock because of the peek hole in it where you can look through and see the ocean.

A little further along, we looked down on an inlet. That is a place where a little bit of the sea comes into a space between the land. The water was so clean and clear. I was so high up that I felt a little dizzy.

Another day we went to visit a cave. It was a long drive from the hotel. We stopped in a small town on the way, and got out to look around. We are standing in the plaza. Every town has a plaza. It is a big open place. It is paved or made of stones, but cars are not allowed. The plaza is a gathering place where people of the town can get together for festivals, dancing, and street parties. The day we were there, the plaza was empty.

After we drove some more, we came to the Indian Cave. In Spanish, it is called La Cueva del Indio. It is very old. A long time ago, people lived in it and they made carvings in the cave walls. Here are some of them. What do they look like to you?

Further into the cave, I saw some animals who live there now. Can you see them? Look closely.

Those are bats up on the ceiling. They are holding on with their feet and sleeping. You probably know that bats sleep in the day time, and wake up at night. Some people are afraid of bats, but they really don't hurt us at all.

I hope that you can see from my pictures that Puerto Rico is a very beautiful place. The world is full of wonderful things to see, and people to meet. I hope that I can show you more when I take other trips this year.

That's all from Puerto Rico!
Your Friend,
Flat Stanley
