Hi again First Graders,
This week we have left Delhi, and traveled down to Kerala State the tip of the country. Did you know that India has states like we do? The USA has 50. India has 29. We are out in a rural area, where there is lots of wilderness and only very small towns. One day we took a boat ride on the Neyyar River. What kind of trees do you see growing beside the river?
Further along the river, we saw this family bathing in the river. Many houses do not have running water. The weather is so warm that it is possible to use the river to take a bath.
It is a lot of coconut husks that have been discarded. Husks are the hard outer part of the coconut that is thrown away.
As the day ended, we went to the beach to see the sunset. It was beautiful, like the sunsets at home. After a day seeing so many new things, it was nice to see something familiar.
This will be my last message from India. On February 3rd we will come home, and I'll see you at school next week!

Yes. They are palm trees. Palm trees grow in hot places all around the world. We saw a big beautiful bird wading in the water. When the boat came near, it flew away.

Driving back from the boat ride, we stopped for a snack at a roadside stand.
Look at the fruit for sale. So many bunches of bananas! Bananas grow here in India. Do you know why some are green and some are yellow?
We ate some bananas, and also got a drink. That is an unusual cup!
It is a coconut! They chop off one end, and put in a straw so you can drink the coconut milk.
It is called coconut milk because it is white like milk, but really it is the juice of the fruit. It tastes very good and sweet.
Out behind the stand, here is what we saw lying on the ground. Do you know what it is?
