Hi from the Big Apple

Hello First Graders!

I am having fun here in NYC. I don't know why it is called the Big Apple. There don't seem to be any apple trees. There are a lot of tall buildings, though, and lots and lots of people. On Saturday we got up early, and went out to explore. Here are some of the places that I visited.

The tallest building in the U.S.A. is right here in New York. Some people call it the Freedom Tower, but its real name is One World Trade Center. You have to stay back a block or so to see the top. If you stand right next to it and look up, you can't see all of it.

One thing that I noticed while we were walking around, was how many police officers were out on the streets. There are so many people and places to protect. It's their job to keep everything safe. They were very nice when I asked to have my picture taken with them.

Do you like boat rides? I do! We took a ride on a boat called the Staten Island Ferry. The ferries go back and forth all day crossing New York Harbor. They take people from one part of NYC to another. The water is so wide there that they can't build a bridge to cross it. While we were riding on one ferry, I took a picture of another one, going back the other way.

The ferries go right past the Statue of Liberty. I was very excited to see that famous statue. Did you know that it was a birthday present? Really! It was! A country named France gave it to the U.S.A. when our country turned 100 years old. I think it may be the biggest birthday present ever!

After our ride, we were hungry!
We went to this old brick building to have lunch. The bottom floor has a restaurant called Fraunces Tavern. It has been here for a LONG time. When our country was new, George Washington had his headquarters here. He ate here and slept upstairs, and had meetings here. The doorman who greets you, and lets you in dresses like one of George Washington's men. Can you see the green sign over my head? That's George!

For our last stop of the day, we went to the Metropolitan Museum. It is full of paintings, statues, and all kinds of art. My favorite part was seeing all of the armor. Armor is metal clothing that knights wore long ago for protection in battles. Even the horses wore armor.

All of that sightseeing made us tired! It was time to go back to the hotel.

I loved my day being a tourist in New York. Because this is a very short trip, this is the only post I will send to you. In fact, as I am writing this on Sunday night, we are getting ready to go to the airport to fly back home. I will see you at school later this week.

Your friend,
Flat Stanley
