Nii Hao from Xi'an, China

I just said hello to you in Chinese!

We got here to the big city of Xi'an at night. You say "She - on". Letters have different sounds in Chinese! Right away, I noticed many highways, cars, and tall buildings all lit up, just like our cities. I was very excited!

We took this picture in the taxi on the way from the airport. It was 10 o'clock at night. An interesting thing about time is that it is the opposite here than at home. In Rock Hill, it was 10 o'clock in the morning! That is because China is on the other side of the earth. When the it is dark here, the sun is shining in the USA. Try it with a flashlight and a ball!

This picture was taken during the day. The sky is always smoky and gray. The air is very dirty. We have been here for more than a week, and have never seen a blue sky. The people here say that it happens sometimes in the summer, but not very often. I am glad that our country has laws to keep our air clean!

One of the first things that we did when we got here was to go to the bank to change our money from dollars to yuan. That is Chinese money. Every country has their own money. Here is what it looks like:

After we had money to spend, we could go out and about in the city. Here I am at a restaurant at breakfast time. No waffles! No bacon and eggs! No Froot Loops!  We had veggies and Chinese dumplings - those are the two round things that look like scoops of mashed potatoes. They are made of bread, and have meat filling. The food was really good - you just have to be ready to try new things.

After breakfast, we took a walk to see the city sights. As we went along, we saw a bride and groom outside of the hotel posing for wedding pictures. How does this bride look different from a bride in our country?

That's right! The color of her dress is different. Our brides wear white. In China, they think that red is a lucky color, so a red wedding dress might help the couple have a happy marriage.

We went to the top of a tall building, and looked down on this street scene. What do you recognize in the picture?

Yes, flags! People here hang the flag to show that they love their country, just like we do. The other red things hanging over the street are paper lanterns. At night they are lit up.

At the end of our walk, we came to a big museum. The Shaanxi History Museum has many art treasures from the past. This is a guard lion. Many buildings have them outside, even today. This one was made a long time ago, so it has been moved indoors for people to visit.

The most famous statues at the museum are the terra cotta people. The were made thousands of years ago. They were buried in the ground with the emperor when he died. (An emperor is like a king.) No one is sure why...maybe to keep him company, or to protect him. Now people are digging them up so everyone can admire them.

That was the end of one day of exploring. I will stay here for another week, so I will try to show you more things from China.

Be good in school, and learn a lot!

Your Friend,
Flat Stanley
